Catalysing Digital Transformation In The Hospitality Sector

 8 December 2023, George TownDigital Penang and Malaysia Business and Budget Hotel Association (MYBHA) Penang Forged Strategic Partnership to Catalyse Digital Transformation in Hospitality SectorIn a landmark collaboration aimed at advancing the digital landscape of Penang’s hospitality sector, Digital Penang, a state government-linked company spearheading Penang’s digitalisation, and the Malaysia Business and Budget Hotel (MYBHA) Penang, representing a network of esteemed hotel industry owners, formally inked a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) at Hotel Malaysia.

“This strategic partnership signals the Penang State Government’s effort to propel the state to the forefront as the preferred destination for visitors,” said YB. Wong Hon Wai, Penang EXCO for Tourism and Creative Economy. “The tourism sector is a substantial contributor to the state’s GDP, and by embracing digitalisation, we aim to extend our reach to global markets and harness technology to elevate the hospitality space.”

YB. Wong Hon Wai further added that the state is launching the Penang Digital Hub program in 2024, a joint initiative of Digital Penang with Malaysia Digital Economy Corporation (MDEC)’s DE Rantau program and local co-working space providers. The programme aims to position Malaysia and Penang as the digital nomad hub in ASEAN. MYBHA Penang members will play a pivotal role in providing top-tier accommodations and facilities for the anticipated influx of digital nomads.

Ts. Ng Kwang Ming, Chief Executive Officer of Digital Penang, elaborated on the collaboration’s key components, stating, “Digital Penang is committed to empowering MYBHA members through curated programmes and workshops. These initiatives will equip them with the latest digital tools, strategies, and insights essential for navigating the dynamic business environment. Acting as a bridge, Digital Penang will facilitate collaboration between independent solution providers and MYBHA members to build a network of possibilities and opportunities within the hospitality sector.”

The newly forged MOU between Digital Penang and MYBHA Penang serves as a pioneering model for integrating digitalisation into the hotel industry, paving the way for innovation, knowledge exchange, and growth. It exemplifies a forward-thinking approach dedicated to ensuring the sustained success of Penang’s vibrant tourism industry. Together, both entities are committed to accelerating the growth of Penang’s digital economy and solidifying the state’s standing as an attractive destination for digital nomads.
